This week, prices for Ukrainian tomatoes have established a new historical anti-record for all the years of independence. After the last wave of price increase, the prices for red greenhouse tomatoes reached rates of 24-30 UAH / kg, and pink and yellow varieties of tomatoes on the Ukrainian wholesale markets are offered today at 38-40 UAH / kg.

This is reported by the experts of Info-Shuvar.

In the south of Ukraine, farmers have already begun to harvest a ground tomato, producers are offering the first harvest at 15-17 UAH / kg, and this price level is also unprecedentedly high. For comparison, a year ago, a greenhouse and a ground tomato was offered at least 2.5-3 times cheaper.

“The rise in prices to unprecedented numbers this season is due to several factors. First, the harvest of tomatoes suffers from weather disasters. The farms of Zakarpattia lost part of the crop due to the massive flooding of greenhouses. In the south, the season of harvesing ground tomato is delayed, and the constant changes in weather contribute to the spread of disease and, accordingly, adversely affect the yield. In addition, for the second year in a row, we have seen a reduction in the area under ground tomato, which is a consequence of a decrease in demand from the processing industry. The population’s demand for a ground tomato is also decreasing, Ukrainians are less preserving and there are more fresh salads,” –Tatiana Getman, the head of the analytical department at Info-Shuvar, explains.
