The head of the State Hydrography, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Alexander Shchiptsov proposes to initiate negotiations on the establishment of the maritime border between Ukraine and Russia. This was reported on the official website of the department.
“Taking into account the norms of international maritime law and consultations with leading international experts on maritime delimitation, we suggest considering the possibility of initiating a forced negotiation process with the Russian Federation on the establishment of the maritime border,” - Shchiptsov said.
Representatives of the State Hydrography also recalled that in 2003, Ukraine and Russia signed an agreement on cooperation and use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, according to which the sea should be delimited in accordance with the agreement. “But such an agreement was not concluded, so the maritime border between Ukraine and Russia does not actually exist,” – representatives of the department say.
