The government is working on the launch of digital driver licenses and student ID cards.
This was announced by Mikhail Fedorov, the Deputy Prime Minister for Digital Transformation, in an interview with Pravda.
“For example, we are currently working on the launch of a digital driver’s license and digital student ID cards. Soon we will launch an experiment when people can carry digital licenses with them instead of plastic ones, and no one will be fined for it,” – he said.
This is an application in a smartphone with a driver’s license and a QR code. According to Fedorov, this is much more convenient, because "30% of the police officers have a tablet." They can scan the QR code and verify the identity in their database.
In villages where there are no tablets, according to the deputy prime minister, all the same, the police get into the patrol car and call the base to check the ID.
