Selling antibiotics without a prescription can be a criminal offense

Suprun demands to toughen the punishment for the unauthorized sale of medicines.

According to Ulyana Suprun, the Acting Minister of Healthcare of Ukraine, in recent years the State Service of Ukraine on Medicines and Drugs Control absolutely does not ensure that pharmacies sell drugs by medical prescription.

She said that in our time, de facto, no one imposes fines on pharmacies that sell over-the-counter medications.

“Drugstores are monitored by the State Service of Ukraine on Medicines and Drugs Control (SSUMDC), which must control so that drugs are sold only by prescription. For many years, it has not been implemented anymore, and very rarely, the SSUMDC comes to the pharmacy and fines it for selling any drugs that should be sold with a prescription, it not only about antibiotics,” - she said.

Suprun also noted that too little punishment is imposed for the offense, and this is the problem.

According to Suprun, there is a significant problem with the fact that today a huge number of viruses have emerged that have shown resistance to antibiotics. Doctors have developed a strategy for how to deal with this. But for its implementation it is necessary to stop the uncontrolled spread of antibiotics.
