1000 pig farms closed in Ukraine

At the same time, experts expect that the trend will continue in the future. So, taking into account the dynamics of the last 7 years, experts from Association of Pig Producers of Ukraine predict that by 2025 the number of pig farms could be reduced to 1,000.

By 2025, the number of pig farms can be reduced to 1000

In Ukraine, the number of industrial pig farms decreases annually and the number of livestock content decreases accordingly.

The trend is noted by the analytical department of the Association of Pig Producers of Ukraine.

“With the development and increase of industrial producers of pork, a reduction in their numbers has been observed in Ukraine. As of January 1, 2015, 3.7 million pigs were kept by 2.7 thousand agricultural enterprises, at the beginning of 2019 the number of operators decreased by a thousand, and the number of retained livestock - by 0.34 million heads,” – the report said.

The profile association noted that statistics also record a decrease in the number of agricultural enterprises that keep pigs — by 200-500 annually.

“Over the past few years there has been a natural elimination of Ukrainian pig farms. The sector is left by small operators with a livestock of less than 2 thousand heads. These are mainly agricultural enterprises engaged in growing pigs situationally (for example, while waiting for favorable prices in the market), do not invest in measures to improve biosafety and production efficiency, therefore they are uncompetitive,” – analysts of the Association commented.

At the same time, experts expect that the trend will continue in the future. So, taking into account the dynamics of the last 7 years, experts from Association of Pig Producers of Ukraine predict that by 2025 the number of pig farms could be reduced to 1,000.

On the other hand, such structural changes cannot be called negative, the profile association noted.

“Those pork producers who have adapted to the new working conditions gradually occupy a niche that has become vacant. If at the beginning of 2015, 67% of the industrial population kept farms with a population of over 5,000 heads, then in the beginning of 2019 almost ¾ industrial pigs were concentrated on such enterprises,” – the Association emphasized.

Earlier it was reported that the prices of products in Ukraine this summer surprise with its instability.
